All about Sony Playstation 4 (New release)

Since launching the original PlayStation all those years ago, Sony's machines have become synonymous with gaming. Here we check out all the latest news, rumours and speculation for the inevitable PlayStation 4

It was over 6 years ago that we first tasted Sony’s vision of the (then) next generation of gaming. The glossy black and chrome behemoth may have been pricey and slightly noisy, but it still won a place in our hearts.

As the years passed the console went on a diet, slimmed down and two revisions later we are left with the current PS3 Super Slim.

While the housing has changed, the internals have stayed the same and all these years after release were positively skipping with anticipation about what Sony is going to offer up next.

This is your complete guide full of news, rumours and everything we know so far about the Sony’s next attempt to invade your living room.

Sony PlayStation 4 - Name

Playstation, Playstation 2 and Playstation 3. It seems Sony likes to stick to a pattern when naming its consoles, so we wouldn’t bet our house against the next one being labelled the Playstation 4.
However, Kotaku, the Japanese gaming site, believe it will be called ‘Orbis’. Random? Not exactly, when you put it before Vita – Sony’s handheld gaming device – it becomes the Latin for ‘Circle of life'. Hardly conclusive, but it would be a good way to tie the two devices together.

Sony Playstation 4 - controller

Sony's DualShock controller has been one of the most iconic accessories of the console era, but the Japanese giant may be planning to put it out to stud when the PlayStation 4 arrives.
Our sister site CVG brings word from its sources that a completely new controller will be unveiled alongside the next-gen console, featuring an LCD touchscreen and biometric sensors on the grips.

Sony PlayStation 4 - Games and launch titles

Rumours have circulated this week that ‘Rainbow 6: Patriots’ could miss the current gen of consoles and head straight for the next generation. The Tom Clancy title, which wowed audiences with its test footage last year, has had a troubled production but would be welcomed in the launch line up.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, expect to see Sony bring out its biggest franchises, the likes of Uncharted, Gran Turismo and inFamous, to make the new console irresistible. We’re sure they’ll be a new FIFA game in there for good measure too.

Sony PlayStation 4 - Technical Specifications

Just days after tech specs for the next-gen Xbox console appeared online, it seems that PlayStation fans are able to get a taster of what to expect from Sony's next console. Videogames website Kotaku have published a story containing information they claim from official Orbis documentation about specs for the next-generation PlayStation.
The gaming site claims the files were shared with the site with SuperDae, an individual who attempted to sell next-gen Xbox dev kits on eBay last year, and who posted images online that appeared to show Kinect 2's ability to map clothes and fingers on his twitterfeed.
The documentation reveals the tech specs of the PS4 dev kits as follows:
  • System Memory: 8GB
  • Video Memory: 2.2 GB
  • CPU: 4x Dual-Core AMD64 "Bulldozer" (so, 8x cores)
  • GPU: AMD R10xx
  • Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet
  • Drive: Blu-Ray
  • HDD: 160GB
  • Audio Output: HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels
Alongside the machine's specifications, Kotaku says that the documentation shows that there is a new controller for the console called the Orbis Development Tool, which maintains many of the features of the DualShock controller, except with a key difference: a touchpad. This touch-surrface interface recognises two point multi-touch and clicked for an additional input interface.
Kotaku says that Sony's next-gen console will also support "multi-simultaneous logins", which will allow multiple users to sign into accounts on a single console at the same time.

Sony PlayStation 4 -The Cloud

Back in 2006, the idea of the all encompassing ‘cloud’ was just a crazy idea in some techno-geeks head. Now, in 2012, we live our lives up there in the cloud. Sony also seems to think the cloud is the way forward as earlier in the bought it bought ‘Gaikai’ for $380 Million dollars. The service, similar to onLive, could stream games down to your TV from a location far away. Could Blu-Ray drives be a thing of the past?

PlayStation 4 - Backwards Compatibility

When the PS3 was first released it allowed you to ditch that PS2, but keep playing classics like Gran Turismo 3 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on your new console. However as the PS3 slimmed down, it lost that feature. Rumours, again from Kotaku, seem to indicate the PS4 won’t even get the initial chance to sample any of its predecessor’s software.

PlayStation 4 - 4K Resolution

The Playstation 3 was one of the devices which brought Blu-Ray to prominence and its successor could again be the pioneer, this time being the first console to offer 4K resolution capabilities. 4K refers to the resolution of 3840 × 2160, a massive step up from the current console which outputs at 1920 × 1080. While 4K TV’s are rare (Probably because of their outstanding price tags) inclusion in the PS4 could definitely bring it into the public eye.

Sony PlayStation 4 - Processor

Earlier in the year, IGN reported what it believed would be the innards of the PS4. It features chips based off AMD's A8-3850 APU and Radeon’s HD 7670 GPU. That particular APU is packing a 2.9 GHz processor along with integrated graphics.

The dedicated GPU will take care of the graphics for console and this features DirectX 11-enabled card clocked to 1GHz with up to 1GB of dedicated VRAM. IGN states, that while may not seem like the best specs of paper, the dedication use of the system as a games consoles with a fairly simply OS should mean its hums along just fine.

Sony PlayStation 4 - release date

With 2012 nearly a thing of the past, could 2013 see the next wave of releases in the console market? Some believe yes. With dev kits being sent to game studios, it is only a matter of time (if they haven’t already) before work starts on the titles that will launch with the new system. If it is going to be next year then look out for a Christmas time release
